"Festen" by Thomas Vinterberg in TR Warszawa

The crew of TR Warszawa is getting its fame as they decide to perform most difficult and demanding, but also most popular contemporary plays. It is here one can see a 5-hour long version of  "Angels in America" by Tony Kushner (always sold out), "Faithless" by Ingmar Bergman or "T.E.O.R.E.M.A.T." based on Pier Paolo Pasolini.
This time I decided to follow the map (TR Warszawa seems not to have their fixed stage, they are moving, and currently perform in on of the most modern filming studios in Poland - ATM, in the outskirts of Warsaw) and take part in the stage version of a wonderful film directed by Thomas Vinterberg - "Festen".
The performance received raving reviews in the world, as it was shown before in many other places. This is quintessential TR Warszawa: they get even more famous abroad then in Poland. The New York Times and New York Post wrote about it, so did Suddeutsche Zeitung and Berliner Zeitung.
And "Festen" is absolutely worth all the praise it is getting.

The story is about a family reunion after some years of not seeing each other, that was caused by the death of a family member. Christian (Andrzej Chyra) - the son of the celebrated pater familias Helge (Jan Peszek), reveals disturbing facts from his childhood, while the rest of the guests raise glasses for Helge - the real hero of the celebration. What happens inside some families, should stay there - that is what can be read between the lines of the play. But it is not supposed to, not always, not when horrible things happen behind closed doors.
The performance of "Festen" is a memorable one. Even if one saw the film before, the accents are put on other things than in the movie. It is a perfect thriller, filled with suspense and secrecy. Magnificent acting from few of Polish finest actors and actresses masterfully led by Andrzej Chyra (previously seen in a part of Stanley Kowalski in a highly recommended "Streetcar Named Desire" with Isabelle Huppert) and Danuta Stenka.
